History of Colombia

Colombia’s history dates back to ancient times, with pre-Colombian tribes of artisans and farmers. They practiced self-rule and built settlements. Their lives centered on crafts, farming, and trade, creating rich traditions and cultures. This lasted until the Spaniards arrived in the early 1500s and began creating settlements. Today, there are still 102 unique indigenous tribes spread across Colombia.

In the 1800’s there was a series of civil wars to break free from Spanish rule. Simón Bolívar was a hero in Colombia, fighting for freedom from the crown. What was once called the “Viceroyalty of New Granada”, a country that included present-day Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Panama, began to break up, and by 1903, the countries were separated and independent.

In the early 1900s, Colombia jumped into the international economy. Coffee became such an important export that in the late 1920s it was one-fifth of Colombia’s gross domestic product.

Colombia’s reputation for drug trafficking started in the 1970s, first with the exportation of marijuana, the the development of cocaine. The drug cartels rose to strength in the 1980s, and the pivotal change came in 1993 when Pablo Escobar was killed. This caused a great unraveling of the various cartels.

2016 opened a new chapter in the history of Colombia. The FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government created a ceasefire agreement under the umbrella of the United Nations. This agreement has brought peace to the region and hope for its people. It has opened up incredible opportunities for the travel industry, and tourism is growing at a steady pace.
