Travel Smart: Essential Tips for Safe International Travel

“Will I feel safe on a tour in Cuba and Colombia?”

In this blog post we will address safe international travel tips to ensure safety on your next trip!

Cuba is considered one of the safest Caribbean countries. Compared to other countries in the region, the island has a remarkable low crime rate, especially when it comes to violent crimes. It is a priority for the Cuban government to ensure the security and safety of international visitors, once tourism is one of the main sources of revenue for the country’s economy.

Over the years, the Colombian government has made significant efforts to improve security and promote tourism in the country. Popular tourist destinations, such as Cartagena, Armenia, Bogotá, and Salento, have seen an increase in visitor numbers and have established great infrastructure to support tourism.

That being said, as with any travel destination, it is important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings. On top of regular safety measures that we are used to—especially in a post-pandemic world—there are some more specific ways to ensure security when traveling internationally.

Here are some of our tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip:

1. Research and plan for safe international travel

Before traveling, familiarize yourself with the region, including the areas you plan to visit. Stay informed about current travel advisories and follow the recommendations of your government. Be sure to check the local calendar for national holidays and how these may impact your trip. It is important to pay attention to things that are often out of our radar in our home countries, such as how much cash you should bring and whether you can drink tap water.

2. Stay in well-known and secure accommodations

Select accommodations that have good reviews, are centrally located, and have security measures in place. Research the safety reputation of the neighborhood where you plan to stay. Make sure to be aware of how accessible your accommodation is in terms of transportation.

3. Take transportation precautions

Use licensed taxis or transportation services recommended by your hotel or tour operator. Avoid using unmarked or unofficial vehicles. If you're using public transportation, keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of pickpockets. Make sure you are able to track your route. It can also be very helpful to let others know where you are and what your ETA is.

4. Choose reputable tour operators

Opt for established and reputable tour operators who have experience in organizing tours in the area. They will have local knowledge and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Tour operators are in contact with local tour guides and have “inside” information that may be inaccessible otherwise. They also have lots of experience traveling to your destination, and will be able to help should any need or emergency arise during your trip.

By taking these precautions and staying vigilant, you can minimize risks and enjoy a safe and memorable trip anywhere you go!
