4 Ways We Practice Responsible Tourism

4 Ways We Practice Responsible Tourism

Globalization has opened the door to opportunities we could have never dreamed of a couple of centuries ago. Who would have imagined back then that the world would be so… connected? In an era where travel has become more accessible than ever before, the concept of responsible tourism has emerged as a vital consideration for travelers all around the globe.

Advancements in technology, transportation, and communication have played a significant role in making travel more accessible and contributed to global connectivity.

Why should we bother?

The power of traveling the world and connecting with cultures that are different from ours comes with greater responsibilities. Tourism affects the world on environmental, social, cultural, and economic levels, far beyond what we would have expected in the past. By practicing it responsibly, the tourist has the opportunity to further environmental conservation, encourage the preservation of culture and language, support and empower local communities, and much more!

Here are some ways that we at Vive Más Tours practice responsible tourism in all of our trips:

1) Respect Local Culture and Customs

  • We take time to research and learn about our destinations, which allows us to develop a certain kind of cultural sensitivity—what is considered respectful and appropriate behavior in the local context. Tourism becomes more responsible and fun when it takes a stance of curiosity instead of indifference or a hegemonic attitude, all of which can have harmful consequences.

  • We avoid actions that might offend or disrupt the life of the local community. We are often unaware of those actions until we either learn about them in our research or inadvertently act upon them, which might result in both awkward and occasionally amusing interactions.

  • To the best of our knowledge, we use proper language and are mindful of religious practices. By learning about the sensitivities around the language and culture we plan to immerse ourselves in, we develop a more personal connection with the local community, building positive relationships and experiencing the authenticity of our destinations.

2) Support the Local Economy

  • We seek out local businesses, such as restaurants and markets. This not only creates a space for authentic experiences, but it contributed to the local economy—helping create jobs, generating income for local residents, and promoting sustainable economic development in the community.

  • We encourage buying locally-made products and souvenirs for loved ones. This is a nice way to show care for those back home while appreciating traditional crafts, arts, and products that are unique to our destinations. Supporting these businesses help preserve cultural heritage and boost the economy.

  • We engage in fair trade practices by respectfully bargaining and paying a fair price for goods and services. While it may be understandable to try and get a better deal out of our purchases, we recognize that insisting on getting a lower price might not always be beneficial to or appreciative of the talent and labor that the locals have invested in their work.

3) Be Mindful of Wildlife and Nature

  • When visiting natural areas, we observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid feeding or touching them. These precautions have in mind both the welfare of the animals and the safety of our travelers, once animals might become agitated or defensive, feeling threatened by human presence. This disruptive behavior can either have negative consequences for their health as well as increase the risk of accidents that could result in harm to both parties.

  • We follow all guidelines and regulations to protect their habitats. Taking these safety measurements can further the integrity of the ecosystem, contributing to long-term sustainability. By adhering to these guidelines we are also working for the conservation of biodiversity and the preservation of natural beauty, as well as doing our part in the collective responsibility of caring for our planet.

  • We engage in careful research before visiting these places to avoid contributing to the exploitation or mistreatment of animals. Many establishments have been known to profit off unethical treatment and display of animals and natural environments. By dedicating time to research beforehand, we ensure we don’t support these places.

4) Overcome Overturism

  • We look for off-the-beaten-path destinations to create unique experiences. This allows us to immerse ourselves in the culture and everyday life, have genuine interactions with locals, create memorable stories by enjoying authentic experiences, and spread the economic benefits of tourism to lesser-known businesses.

  • We choose accommodations in non-popular areas to contribute to the local economy and immerse ourselves in the culture. By doing so, we also enjoy a less crowded experience, and are able to prioritize comfort and tailor our stay to our preferences. This approach also empowers the local community by acknowledging and valuing their role in the tourism industry.

  • We share our experiences and encourage a shift in the travel narrative by highlighting the value of these hidden gems. Storytelling allows us to become advocates of responsible tourism, encouraging others to have deeper cultural experiences and enjoy the hidden beauties of less-known destinations. It broadens both our and others’ perspectives, giving us the opportunity to share the things we’ve learned and experiences on our trips.

Responsible tourism is a wonderful way to engage with the world, granting us the possibility to have our identities shaped by cultures and people we would never really get to know had we chosen a more individualistic approach to traveling. With respect and curiosity, we as travelers choose to contribute to a better, stronger, and more united global community. We at Vive Más Tours invite you to come with us and experience the joy and privilege of being a responsible tourist.
